LOGGING ON THE OPUS(tm) SYSTEM
Global Commands
---------------
LOG So, your modem is screaming "CONNECT" -- what happens now?
ON
Your first step is an easy one. Just wait a moment. OPUS(tm)
does not require any Carriage Returns or other keys to determine
your incoming baud rate. It is done automatically.
There are a few things to remember about OPUS(tm) which
generally apply. OPUS(tm) prompts will often accept the most
commonly used response by pressing RETURN on your keyboard.
When OPUS(tm) asks for a "Y" or "N" response, one of those
characters will be in UPPER CASE. This one is an "automatic"
option. By simply pressing Carriage Return you will
automatically select the UPPER CASE command for OPUS(tm) to
process.

STACK Commands may be "stacked" whenever you like. This will be
discussed in more detail later on; however, for those of you
who are familiar with command stacking, OPUS(tm) requires a
space between commands. For example, from the Main Menu,
if you wish to log off the system simply enter "g y n" and a
Carriage Return. All three commands will be processed by
OPUS(tm) in their proper order.
OPUS(tm) also responds to standardized control character
commands found on most Bulletin Boards. These commands are
universal to OPUS(tm) -- they will work anywhere at anytime:
CONTROL CONTROL-S will pause any screen display
KEYS CONTROL-K will abort anything
CONTROL-C will abort anything
CONTROL-X (twice) will abort file transfers
Now, having said that, you may find some screen displays which
cannot be aborted. This is an option the SysOp has. If you
cannot abort a certain screen it is because the SysOp has
felt it is of such importance that you should read it.
Please do so.

The Welcome Screens
-------------------
SIGN Each OPUS(tm) will display one or more "welcome screens" when
ON you first log on. These screens are designed by the SysOp
and can be real works of art. The first screen you will see
will not be available in ANSI graphics. Why? Because
OPUS(tm) does not know at first whether you have asked for ANSI
graphics and, in fact, WHO you are. It takes the most
conservative course. Typically the opening screen will
give you some pertinent information about the BBS you have
contacted. Such things as the board name, SysOp's name,
hours of operation, etc., are the most common. Openning ANSI
graphics will be available if the Opus system is running
ROVER(tm) by Mike Bryeans.
If this is your first call to the BBS you will see one or more
special screens designed especially for the new user. Usually
these screens will briefly discuss the BBS policy and give you
additional information about the system itself. They may
also discuss any registration process the SysOp requires.
Please read these screens carefully as they are only available
to new users -- you will only see them once.

SIGN As a first time caller you may find an online registration
UP process available through a questionnaire screen. If so, and you
wish to become a member of the board, be sure to complete the
questionnaire entirely.
The Log-On Process
LOG Whether you're a first time caller or an old hand you must let
ON OPUS(tm) know who you are and what your password is. The
process looks like this:
OPUS(tm) Screen Display: Typical Logon Process
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
What is your FIRST name: JOHN
What is your LAST name: JONES

John Jones [Y,n]? y (or just press RETURN)

Password: SILLYP

+-----------------------------------------------------------------+

That's the long way 'round! You can also provide the entire
logon sequence in one line (remember command stacking):
OPUS(tm) Screen Display: Quick Log
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+

What is your FIRST name: JOHN JONES Y SILLYP (Press RETURN)

+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
This single line command will do the same thing as the series of
prompts/replies in the Figure -- a nifty feature of OPUS(tm).
If you are a first time caller you will be prompted again to
confirm your password. As mentioned earlier, there might be a
questionnaire to complete also.

Finally, if this your first call, you will be asked whether or
not you would like ANSI graphics screens. If you answer
positively all following screens will be in color, with ANSI
graphics as provided by the SysOp. If you elect to not have
ANSI capabilities you may change your mind later from the Main
Menu.
Following your logon the daily BBS bulletin will be displayed
and you will be left at the OPUS(tm) Main Menu.
